Class 1 Labels: Essential for Safe Transport of Explosives
Class 1 labels, specifically the orange explosive labels, are crucial for the safe transportation of any chemical compound, mixture, or device designed to function through explosion or capable of producing an explosive or pyrotechnic effect. These labels are necessary for a wide variety of items, ranging from nitroglycerin, blasting caps, and ammunition, to airbag detonators, fireworks, and even party poppers. In essence, any explosive substance or device that could present a hazard during transit requires the use of these important safety labels.
Explosive substances are categorised into six divisions according to the level of risk they present. The labels within Class 1 are further divided into 13 compatibility groups, each identified by a letter that appears at the center of the diamond-shaped label. This helps to identify the compatibility and risks associated with various explosive substances.
For example, Class 1 labels used for explosive divisions 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 indicate highly hazardous explosives. These labels are designed to clearly display the explosive symbol, the division number (1.1, 1.2, or 1.3), and a letter representing the compatibility group. This classification covers mass explosives like dynamite or TNT, as well as projection hazards such as detonating fuses and fire hazards like shotgun cartridges and flares.
On the other hand, Class 1 labels for divisions 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 are for less hazardous explosives. These labels only display the division number and compatibility group letter. The numerals printed on the label must be at least 30mm in height. These less hazardous items include insensitive articles and those with no significant hazard, such as safety fuses and certain types of fireworks.
