Known as the Marine Immersion Label Testing Standard, it ensures that labels used on hazardous chemical containers—especially those shipped by sea—remain legible and firmly attached, even after prolonged exposure to salt water, sunlight, and abrasion.

BS5609 is broken into three key sections:
